Sloane Stephens and Danielle Collins posted straight-set wins Wednesday in Prague, Czech Republic, leading the United States to a 2-1 win over Spain and a berth in the semifinals of the Billie Jean Cup.

The United States, Slovakia and Spain all finished 1-1 in Group C, but the U.S. advanced on a tiebreaker.

Russia (2-0) will the United States’ semifinal opponent on Friday after beating defending champion France 2-1 to win Group A.

Stephens beat Nuria Parrizas Diaz 6-4, 6-4 before Collins routed Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-1, 6-0. Those two wins rendered the doubles match meaningless, but Spain’s Aliona Bolsova and Rebeka Masarova topped the United States’ Caroline Dolehide and CoCo Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-4.

The other two semifinalists will be determined when group play concludes Thursday. In Group B, Australia (1-0) will oppose Belarus (0-1) with Belgium (1-1) idle. In Group D, the winner between Switzerland (1-0) and the Czech Republic (1-0) will advance, with Germany (0-2) already eliminated.

The competition used to be known as the Fed Cup.
