The Philadelphia Phillies declined 2022 club options on outfielders Andrew McCutchen and Odubel Herrera on Wednesday.
Philadelphia will pay McCutchen a $3 million buyout as opposed to $15 million in salary. He batted .222 with 27 homers and 80 RBIs in 144 games this last season.
Herrera will receive a $2.5 million buyout instead of $11.5 million in salary. He batted .260 with 13 homers and 51 RBIs in 124 games.
The 35-year-old McCutchen once was among baseball’s biggest stars but is no longer the force he was as a five-time All-Star for the Pittsburgh Pirates. McCutchen was National League MVP in 2013 but he last made the All-Star team in 2015.
McCutchen has a .280 average with 270 homers and 933 RBIs in 1,761 career games over 13 seasons with the Pirates (2009-17), San Francisco Giants (2018), New York Yankees (2018) and Phillies (2019-21).
Herrera, 29, has a .274 career average with 73 homers and 284 RBIs in 755 games over six seasons with the Phillies. He was an All-Star in 2016 when he batted .286 with 15 homers, 49 RBIs and a career-best 25 steals.
