The Washington Spirit agreed to terms with free agent defender Casey Krueger on a three-year contract, the club announced Wednesday.

Krueger recorded eight goals and 11 assists in 129 career NWSL matches (126 starts) with the Chicago Red Stars from 2016-23. She was named to the NWSL Best XI in 2017 and 2019.

“Casey brings a championship pedigree and veteran presence to the Spirit,” general manager Mark Krikorian said. “With her world-class defensive qualities, she will instantly enhance our defense’s potential. Her experience and grit will be essential to our team both on and off the pitch.”

Krueger, 33, began her NWSL career with the Boston Breakers after she was selected with the fifth overall pick in 2013’s inaugural NWSL College Draft. She missed the 2013-14 seasons with injuries and played abroad in 2015.

Krueger has also been a longtime feature on United States Women’s National Team, recording 42 career caps and four assists.
