Virginia fired women’s basketball coach Tina Thompson on Thursday after four losing seasons.
The Cavaliers concluded a 5-22 season with a first-round loss in the ACC tournament on Wednesday.
Thompson, a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, had one year left on her contract.
Thompson, 47, leaves Virginia with a 30-63 record. It was her first head coaching position.
“Unfortunately, we have not experienced the kind of success this program has come to expect and deserve,” UVA athletic director Carla Williams said. “I am thankful for Coach Thompson’s efforts and I wish her the very best.”
Thompson won two Olympic gold medals and four WNBA championships during her playing career.
