The Phoenix Mercury are hiring Golden State Warriors executive director of basketball operations Nick U’Ren as their next general manager, the team announced Monday.

U’Ren will replace current general manager Jim Pitman after the end of the season. Pitman, who is set to retire, will remain the chief financial officer of both the Mercury and the Phoenix Suns.

Pitman took over as general manager in 2013, and the Mercury won the championship the following year, winning a league-record 29 regular-season games in 2014. During Pitman’s tenure, Phoenix racked up 169 regular-season victories.

U’Ren has been working his way up in the Warriors organization for the past nine years, starting out as the director of coaching operations.

The Mercury have already experienced a lot of change this season, as they let go of head coach Vanessa Nygaard last month after a 2-10 start to the 2023 campaign. Nikki Blue is currently serving as interim head coach.

Phoenix sits in last place in the WNBA at 4-14.
