PREM: Reports: Wrexham set to loan Paul Mullin to Wigan Athletic

Date:

Wrexham are finalizing a deal to loan fan-favorite striker Paul Mullin to Wigan Athletic for the upcoming season, Sky Sports and the Daily Mail reported Friday.

Wigan plan to sign Mullin on a season-long loan, according to Sky Sports.

Mullin, 30, has been with Wrexham since 2021 and has two years remaining on his contract. He played a major part in helping them earn the first two of their unprecedented three consecutive promotions not long after actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney purchased the club.

Mullin racked up 99 goals in 158 matches across all competitions for Wrexham, but following a reported disagreement with manager Phil Parkinson, the forward did not play in a game after January.

“I let that get to me, to be honest, from where I’ve been to then only being allowed to play four games and finding myself being left out of the team,” Mullin said on a recent episode of “Welcome to Wrexham,” the Hollywood stars’ TV series about the club. “I resented it and I carried that for weeks because I felt it was unjust.”

“I think I’m more annoyed now. It’s the annoyance of training every single day, doing everything I can, and looking back on everything I’ve done,” Mullin said, adding that Parkinson “clearly” trusts him less than before.

Wrexham recently added striker Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle, further crowding out opportunities for Mullin to play there.

If Mullin lands with Wigan, he will be back to playing in EFL League One (third tier) while Wrexham enjoy their first season in the second tier (now known as the Championship) since 1981-82.
