NOTES: The Country Club is one of the five charter clubs founding the USGA and will play host to the U.S. Open for the first time since 1988 (won by Curtis Strange). The first edition in 1913 was won by Francis Ouimet. Gil Hanse oversaw a 2020 renovation intended to restore the look and feel of the original design, and the par-3 11th hole will be used in a major for the first time since 1913. … The USGA ruled to allow qualified players who participated in the first LIV Golf event in London last week to compete this week. … Tiger Woods is not in the field after teeing it up at the Masters and the PGA Championship. He has stated his intention to play in The Open Championship at St. Andrews next month. … Each of the past three U.S. Opens contested at The Country Club has gone to a playoff, but the championship itself has not required extra holes since 2008. … Players in their 20s have won five of the past six majors.
BEST BETS: Rory McIlroy (+1100) is coming off a victory as he seeks his first major title since 2014. He has had 15 top-10s since. … Justin Thomas (+1200) seeks back-to-back major titles after winning his second PGA Championship last month. … Jon Rahm (+1400) is defending his maiden major title. Only two players in the past 50 years have gone back-to-back at the U.S. Open. … Scottie Scheffler (+1400) has already won four times this season along with a runner-up and is attempting to become only the sixth player to win the Masters and the U.S. Open in the same year. … Collin Morikawa (+2800) is trying to join Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson as players to win a major in three consecutive years. … Matthew Fitzpatrick (+2800) won the 2013 U.S. Amateur, the most recent USGA championship played at The Country Club. He is seeking his first win in North America. … Brooks Koepka (+4000) has only played four times since the Players in March but has a stellar U.S. Open resume and is seeking to join Woods and Hale Irwin as the only three-time winners of the event.
