The Chicago Red Stars announced Sunday that defender Zoe Morse will not return to the team in 2023.

Morse’s contract ended after the 2022 NWSL regular season.

Morse, 24, made 22 starts and registered one assist in 2022.

“Zoe showed great leadership and tenacity this season when she was asked to play a role in our defense that she was not expecting at the start of the season,” Red Stars associate general manager Michelle Lomnicki said in a news release. “Zoe has a bright future ahead of her, both on and off the field, and we thank her for all that she contributed to the club during her time with us.”

The Red Stars drafted Morse with the 19th overall pick in 2020 out of the University of Virginia.

Her teammates nominated her for this season’s NWSL Players Association’s Ally Award, an award that recognizes a player for embodying the idea of “teammate.”
