Sydney Leroux and Claire Emslie scored first-half goals to lift Angel City FC to a 2-1 victory over the Utah Royals in Sandy, Utah, on Friday night.

Angel City (3-3-1, 10 points) earned its third victory in four matches and is unbeaten over its past three road matches despite Utah finishing with a 13-5 advantage in total shots.

Dana Foederer scored a second-half goal for the Royals (1-5-1, 4 points), who are winless in their past five matches. Utah has scored more than a single goal in only one match this season.

Utah attacked aggressively from the start. The Royals put three shots on frame and generated three corner kicks in the first 23 minutes. None of it was enough to break through with a goal and Utah soon fell into a big hole before halftime.

Angel City weathered the early storm and struck first behind a header from Leroux in the 29th minute. Alyssa Thompson sent a cross into the back post and Leroux knocked home the point-blank shot from close range.

The Los Angeles club doubled the lead in the 40th minute on Emslie’s penalty kick. It was her fourth goal over the past four matches.

Utah pulled one back in the 51st minute on Foederer’s goal. Ally Sentnor went one versus one with a defender and flicked the ball to an unmarked Foederer above the penalty spot. Foederer blasted it home inside the near post.
