San Jose Sharks defenseman Nikolai Knyzhov is expected to miss the first few months of the upcoming season after sustaining a torn right Achilles tendon.

Knyzhov, 24, was injured while participating in off-ice training. He underwent surgery on Wednesday at Kaiser Permanente San Jose, with the Sharks estimating that he’ll need approximately six months to recover.

Knyzhov sat out all of last season with a groin injury.

He has totaled 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in 59 career games with the Sharks.
