The Pittsburgh Penguins made a pair of acquisitions before Monday’s NHL trade deadline, acquiring forward Rickard Rakell from the Anaheim Ducks and defenseman Nathan Beaulieu from the Winnipeg Jets.
Pittsburgh added the two players, whose contracts expire after the 2021-22 season, as it makes a push to win the Metropolitan Division.
In exchange for Rakell, the Penguins sent Anaheim forwards Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon, goaltender Calle Clang and a 2022 second-round draft pick. Anaheim will retain 35 percent of Rakell’s salary.
The Penguins sent Winnipeg a conditional 2022 seventh-round draft pick for Beaulieu.
Rakell, 28, has spent his entire 10-year NHL career with the Ducks after they selected him in the first round of the 2011 draft. The Swede plays on the right wing and has recorded 154 goals and 185 assists in 550 career games, including 16 goals and 12 assists this season over 51 games.
In 24 games for the Jets this season, Beaulieu, 29, has tallied four assists and 25 penalty minutes while averaging a career-low 10:46 of ice time per game.
A first-round draft pick in 2011 by the Montreal Canadiens, the left-shot defenseman has played 10 NHL seasons for Montreal (2012-17), the Buffalo Sabres (2017-19) and Winnipeg. He has 12 goals and 82 assists in 419 career games.
