NHL: NHL roundup: Panthers pound Canadiens 9-5
Carter Verhaeghe and Aaron Ekblad scored two goals each as the Florida Panthers hammered the Montreal Canadiens 9-5 on Thursday night in Sunrise, Fla.
The Panthers’ other goals came from Matthew Tkachuk, Colin White, Gustav Forsling, Ryan Lomberg and Sam Reinhart. Tkachuk finished with four points, Josh Mahura and Aleksander Barkov each had two assists and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 25 shots for the win.

The Panthers led 7-3 after the first period as the 10 total goals tied an NHL record. The only other times 10 goals were scored in an opening period was in a 1987 game between the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks and a 1982 contest featuring the Buffalo Sabres and the Canadiens. The record for most goals in any period is 12.
Mike Matheson and Anthony Richard logged a goal and an assist apiece while Michael Pezzetta, Rafael Harvey-Pinard and Rem Pitlick also scored for the Canadiens.
Flames 7, Golden Knights 2
Tyler Toffoli had two goals and two assists, Blake Coleman scored twice and Calgary scored four times in the third period to win for the first time in nine games at Las Vegas and hand the Golden Knights their most lopsided loss of the season.
It was the first four-point game of the season for Toffoli. MacKenzie Weegar added a goal and an assist and Mikael Backlund and Dillon Dube also scored for Calgary. Jacob Markstrom made 17 saves.
Reilly Smith had a goal and an assist and Zach Whitecloud also scored for Pacific Division-leading Vegas, which had a four-game winning streak end. Jonathan Quick finished with 23 saves.
Kraken 2, Sharks 1 (OT)
Vince Dunn scored at 1:58 of overtime as Seattle defeated host San Jose.
Oliver Bjorkstrand had a goal and an assist and goaltender Philipp Grubauer made 31 saves for Seattle, which snapped a three-game winless streak (0-2-1).
Rookie William Eklund scored on a penalty shot early in the third period for San Jose, which has won just once in its past 11 games (1-8-2). James Reimer stopped 30 of 32 shots.
Kings 4, Blue Jackets 1
Drew Doughty, Anze Kopitar, Viktor Arvidsson and Carl Grundstrom scored in a 9:04 span of the second period to help Los Angeles top visiting Columbus.
Pheonix Copley made 30 saves for the Kings, who are 7-0-1 in their past eight games and moved a point back of Vegas for first place in the Pacific Division.
Kirill Marchenko scored for Columbus, which is 1-4-1 in its past six games. Daniil Tarasov stopped all 15 shots during his superb first period but was pulled after surrendering four goals on 12 shots in the second period. Michael Hutchinson replaced Tarasov and stopped all nine shots he faced.
Bruins 3, Jets 0
Jeremy Swayman stopped 36 shots for his third shutout of the season as Boston prevailed in Winnipeg to snap a two-game losing skid.
Trent Frederic, Pavel Zacha and Tomas Nosek were the goal-scorers for the Bruins, who had dropped three of their previous four games.
It was just the fourth time this season that the Jets were shut out. Connor Hellebuyck made 21 saves on 23 shots for the Jets, who have won just four times in their past 15 games.
Avalanche 5, Senators 4
Mikko Rantanen had a goal and two assists, Cale Makar added a goal and an assist and visiting Colorado beat Ottawa.
Valeri Nichushkin, Evan Rodrigues and Lars Eller also scored, Nathan MacKinnon recorded three assists and Jonas Johansson made 32 saves for the Avalanche, who posted their fourth consecutive victory.
Brady Tkachuk had a goal and an assist while Drake Batherson, Travis Hamonic and Shane Pinto scored goals for the Senators, who took their fourth loss in a row. Tim Stutzle had three assists, Jake Sanderson finished with two assists and Mads Sogaard turned away 25 shots.
Rangers 4, Penguins 2
Chris Kreider scored the go-ahead goal at 11:45 of the third period to give New York a win over visiting Pittsburgh.
Mika Zibanejad had a goal and an assist and Tyler Motte scored for the Rangers, who are 4-0-1 in their past five games. New York goaltender Igor Shesterkin made 30 saves.
Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist, Jake Guentzel scored and Sidney Crosby added two assists for the Penguins, who lost their second straight game.
Lightning 4, Devils 3 (SO)
Alex Killorn scored the deciding goal in a shootout to lift Tampa Bay to a win in Newark, N.J.
Steven Stamkos scored twice and had an assist and Ross Colton added a goal as the Lightning improved to 4-1-1 in their past six games. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves.
Timo Meier scored twice and Tomas Tatar had one tally for the Devils. Akira Schmid posted 21 saves but fell to 8-4-2.
Oilers 4, Stars 1
Mattias Janmark scored two goals, Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist and Evan Bouchard recorded two assists as Edmonton collected a win over visiting Dallas.
Warren Foegele scored the other goal for the Oilers, who are 6-2-0 in their past eight games. Stuart Skinner made 25 saves.
The Stars lost their second consecutive game, leaving them one point ahead of the second-place Minnesota Wild in the Central Division. Wyatt Johnston scored Dallas’ only goal, and Jake Oettinger stopped 26 shots.
Blackhawks 2, Predators 1
Alex Stalock made 35 saves while Lukas Reichel and Joey Anderson scored as visiting Chicago edged Nashville.
The Blackhawks have won consecutive contests for the first time since a five-game winning streak from Feb. 17-25.
Roman Josi’s goal with 25 seconds left in regulation made things interesting, but the Predators had a three-game winning streak snapped. Juuse Saros stopped 19 shots.
Coyotes 3, Canucks 2
Travis Boyd scored a pair of goals and Arizona claimed a fifth consecutive home victory with a win over Vancouver in Tempe, Ariz.
Lawson Crouse also scored and Ivan Prosvetov made 29 saves for the Coyotes, who are riding a 5-0-2 stretch.
Andrei Kuzmenko and Elias Pettersson replied for the Canucks, who saw their five-game winning streak end. Thatcher Demko stopped 24 shots.
