Calgary Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane was suspended one game on Sunday for cross-checking Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann.

Mangiapane received the discipline after a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety.

In Saturday night’s 6-3 Flames win in Seattle, Mangiapane cross-checked McCann twice — once to the leg, the second to the back of his head — after the latter went down on the ice to block his shot at 8:43 of the first period. Mangiapane received a match penalty on the play.

McCann, 27, briefly exited the game before returning to the bench prior to the end of the period.

In a video explanation of the discipline, a Department of Player Safety official acknowledged that Mangiapane said he did not intend to drive McCann’s head into the ice.

“However, Mangiapane is in control throughout this sequence and makes the decision to deliver a reckless cross-check to a player lying vulnerable on the ice, which causes McCann’s head to impact the ice,” the official said.

Mangiapane had not previously been disciplined in his seven-year NHL career. He will be forced to miss Tuesday’s home game against the Nashville Predators.

Mangiapane, 27, has seven points (four goals, three assists) in 11 games this season.

He has totaled 182 points (99 goals, 83 assists) in 353 career games since being selected by the Flames in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft.
