The New Jersey Devils’ preseason finale against the visiting New York Islanders was canceled after a power outage affected parts of the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

The scoreboard and some lighting in the northeast bank of the building went dark. A tweet from the official account for the Prudential Center said that everyone in the arena was safe.

The game was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Just after 8, the Devils announced that the game was canceled and would not be rescheduled. By that time, the lights that had gone out hadn’t yet been restored.

“In consultation with the Islanders and the NHL, it was determined that the playing conditions were unsuitable for players on both teams,” the Devils said in a statement.

New Jersey added that it would compensate fans in attendance with an equal number of tickets to a regular-season home game.
