Jack Hughes scored twice and added an assist, while Connor Hellebuyck improved to 3-0-0 with the New Jersey Devils in a 4-3 shootout win against the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday in Newark, N.J.

Connor Brown added a goal and an assist for the Devils, who have won six of their past seven games. Hellebuyck made 18 saves in his first home start for New Jersey since being acquired from the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 23.

Evan Bouchard and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins each had a goal and an assist, Leon Draisaitl also scored, and Kasperi Kapanen had two assists for the Oilers, whose three-game winning streak ended. Edmonton fell to 7-0-1 on the road.

Oilers goalie Tristan Jarry made 31 saves after recording shutouts in his previous two starts. Connor McDavid had the secondary assist on Draisaitl’s third-period goal, extending his assist streak to 16 games, the longest such streak to start an NHL season.

Draisaitl tied the game 3-3 one minute into the third period. The Oilers were finishing a five-on-three power play that carried over from the previous period when Kapanen set up Draisaitl for a snap shot.

McDavid and New Jersey’s Jesper Bratt scored early in the shootout, and Arseny Gritsyuk beat Jarry in the fourth round for the decisive goal. Hellebuyck turned away Kapanen’s attempt to seal the win.

Bouchard put Edmonton ahead 1-0 at 8:29 of the first period. Mattias Ekholm set up the goal with a cross-ice pass, and Bouchard’s slap shot beat Hellebuyck top shelf.

Brown tied the game 1-1 on a power play at 7:42 of the second period. Hughes’ shot was blocked in front of Edmonton’s net, and Brown scored on the rebound from close range, ending Jarry’s shutout streak at 153:59.

Hughes put the Devils in front 2-1 at 14:50 of the second period when Dougie Hamilton set him up for a one-timer. Hughes scored again 45 seconds later on a power play, tipping in Brown’s cross-ice shot to extend the lead to 3-1.

Nugent-Hopkins cut the deficit to 3-2 at 18:16 of the second with a wrist shot through traffic on a power play.

The Devils outshot the Oilers 15-3 in the second period.
