Sebastian Aho and Jesper Fast scored in the first 87 seconds of the third period to break a tie, and the visiting Carolina Hurricanes went on to defeat the winless Vancouver Canucks 3-2 on Monday night.

Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov opened the scoring on a first-period power play for his seventh goal of the season, and Frederik Andersen stopped 14 shots.

J.T. Miller scored twice for Vancouver, including a power-play goal in the first period. Thatcher Demko made 36 saves for the Canucks, who were outshot 15-7 in the first period. In the third period, Vancouver managed just two shots on goal in the first 12 1/2 minutes.

The Hurricanes wrapped up a 3-1-1 road trip to the Western Conference, twice winning by one goal.

Vancouver, which remains winless at 0-5-2, has scored just two goals in the third period this season. Four of the team’s defeats have come by one goal.

Svechnikov has scored six goals across the last four games.

Miller’s second goal of the game came 10:40 into the third period to trim the Canucks’ deficit to 3-2.

Despite that goal, the Hurricanes maintained control of play for the most part. In the third period, Carolina produced a 15-3 advantage in shots on goal.

Aho posted the go-ahead goal on a rebound just 50 seconds into the third period after Seth Jarvis took the puck in for a shot. Aho was there to clean it up.

Fast’s first goal of the season went into the net off his skate at 1:27 of the third.

Miller has four goals this season and is the second Canuck to score multiple goals in a game in 2022-23.

After each team capitalized on a power play in the first period, there were no penalties called in the game’s final 28 minutes. Bo Horvat tallied twice against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 18.
