New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields returned to the practice field but did not participate in team or individual drills on Friday, one day after he was carted off with a dislocated toe on his right foot.

Fields, 26, is considered day-to-day and ESPN reported that he is expected to be under center when the Jets open the season on Sept. 7 against his former team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“When he’s ready to come back, we’ll make sure he’s out on the field,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. “He’s going to be in the meetings and all those things. For the most part, we’re going to work together to make sure it’s collaborative as to when he gets back on the field.”

Fields was hurt Thursday while moving to his right and throwing a pass to tight end Jeremy Ruckert. Fields fell to the ground, sat upright and talked with trainers before moving to the injury tent.

He will cede first-team snaps to veteran backup Tyrod Taylor in the interim. Adrian Martinez, the 2024 United Football League MVP, and rookie Brady Cook also are in the quarterback room.

A 2021 first-round pick of the Chicago Bears, Fields signed a two-year, $40 million contract in March, and the Jets are counting on him to replace Aaron Rodgers.

Fields is 14-30 as a starter and has passed for 7,780 yards with 45 touchdowns and 31 interceptions in 50 games with the Bears (2021-23) and Steelers. He has rushed for 2,509 yards and 19 touchdowns.
