The Emporia State football team is mourning the loss of a player who died in a cliff-diving accident this weekend.

Redshirt freshman wide receiver Brexten Green, 20, died Saturday at Grand Lake in Delaware County, Okla.

“It’s a terrible day for Emporia State football and just a devastating loss for the Green family,” said Emporia State football coach Garin Higgins. “Brexten was a great teammate who cared so much about this football program. It showed in his competitive spirit, his work ethic and his willingness to be there for his teammates. He will always be a part of our Hornet football family.”

Green was an all-state wide receiver and defensive back and helped Cashion High School win an Oklahoma Class A state championship in 2021.

Rescue crews responded to an emergency call Saturday night and found his body in 31 feet of water.

Officials at Division II Emporia State, located in Emporia, Kan., said funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date. Counselors were made available to members of the football team, students and staff members.
