TCU will look to continue its early season success when it meets Nicholls State on Thursday night in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Horned Frogs are 2-0 as they work to meld a new roster that features just four players from last season’s squad and a handful of players from the transfer portal.
TCU’s most recent outing was an easy 83-51 win Monday at home over Southern Miss.
Mike Miles, one of the holdovers, paced the Horned Frogs with 20 points, while two transfers — Emanuel Miller (Texas A&M) and Micah Peavy (Texas Tech) — added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Miller also pulled down 13 rebounds to record his second double-double in his two games in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs beat McNeese 77-61 in their opener on Nov. 11.
“Seeing guys in certain situations, it takes time,” TCU coach Jamie Dixon said of the process of building a team from different parts. “But every team is going through it. Everybody’s got transfers. It shouldn’t be a surprise. You give kids an opportunity to go wherever they want to go, then they’re going to go wherever they want to go. It’s just the reality.”
The Colonels (3-1) remain in Texas following Monday’s 89-60 loss at No. 9 Baylor. That game was Nicholls State’s third in a four-day stretch, and the Colonels never led in the game and trailed by 20 at the half to the defending national champions.
Ty Gordon led Nicholls State with 20 points in the loss. Latrell Jones added 11 points for the Colonels, who were picked in the preseason to finish as the Southland Conference champion.
Gordon has been, as expected, one of Nicholls’ leaders this season. How he translates his prowess on the court to making the Colonels better will be a key to their success.
“I want to be a vocal leader,” Gordon said. “Giving those guys an encouraging word, and just giving it all I got because they know what I can do, and I know what I can do.”
