Dennis Evans, a 7-foot-1 center ranked No. 31 overall in his class by the 247Sports composite, announced his commitment to Minnesota on Monday.

While Rivals rates Evans a five-star recruit, other recruiting services that make up the composite rankings peg him as a four-star player. He is considered the No. 3 or No. 4 center in the class.

Evans, from Hillcrest High School in Riverside, Calif., chose the Golden Gophers over TCU.

He was part of the Team USA roster that won gold at the FIBA U17 World Cup this summer.

“I was 6-foot-7 in the seventh grade. Now I stand at 7-foot-1,” Evans said in an announcement video posted to social media. “I’m a gold medalist. I want to major in business. And next year, I’ll be a Golden Gopher at the University of Minnesota.”

According to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Evans is the highest-rated recruit to commit to Minnesota since Kris Humphries, who went on to play in the NBA, in 2003.
