Vancouver Whitecaps captain Russell Teibert is recovering from surgery on his right ankle.

The 29-year-old midfielder is expected to make a full recovery before the start of 2023 training camp.

“We are pleased to hear that Russell’s surgery was a success,” Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster said in a news release Tuesday. “We will help Russell throughout his recovery process and look forward to having him fully fit for the start of our preseason.”

Teibert recorded one assist in 29 matches (24 starts) in 2022, his 12th season with Vancouver.

He is tied for fourth in franchise history with 286 appearances across all competitions. Teibert has four goals and 21 assists in 246 MLS games (193 starts).

The Whitecaps also announced a new contract with defender Luis Martins through 2024 with a club option for 2025.

“We are pleased to reach a new agreement with Luis,” Schuster said. “Luis joined us in May and started to help the team but suffered a setback with an injury. When he returned, he showed his quality on both sides of the ball. Luis has a strong understanding of our system and will now benefit from having a preseason at our club.”

Martins, 29, recorded three assists in 12 games (five starts) with Vancouver. The Portugal native had one goal and six assists in 55 games (51 starts) with Sporting Kansas City from 2019-21.
