Reigning MLS Defender of the Year Jakob Glesnes and the Philadelphia Union agreed to terms on a contract through the 2025 season, the team announced Tuesday.

Financial terms were not disclosed by the Union, who hold an option on the contract for the 2026 season.

“Since arriving in MLS, Jakob has been a critical piece of our backline’s strong defensive record and was recognized individually as the 2022 MLS Defender of the Year,” Union sporting director Ernst Tanner said. “Jakob has proven not only his sporting value but also as a leader on and off the field. We’re happy to have reached an agreement to extend his stay in Philadelphia.”

Glesnes, who turns 29 on Saturday, was named to his first MLS All-Star Game and first MLS Best XI selection in 2022.

He has yet to record a goal or an assist in four matches (all starts) this season. He has four goals and five assists in 91 career MLS matches (89 starts) since joining the Union from Stromsgodset Toppfotball of first-tier Norwegian league Eliteserien.
