Inter Miami acquired midfielder David Ayala from the Portland Timbers, the clubs announced Friday.

In exchange for the 23-year-old Argentina international, Portland receives $2 million guaranteed and up to $150,000 more if certain performance metrics are reached. The Timbers also retain a future sell-on percentage.

Ayala will occupy an U22 Initiative roster slot with the reigning MLS Cup champions and is under contract through the end of the 2026 season.

“We would like to thank David for his contributions and commitment to the club since arriving as a young player four years ago, and we wish him all the best,” said Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy.

“This move allows David the opportunity to be situated closer to family as he assesses the next phase of his career. The return will allow us the ability to strengthen and reinforce our roster over the long term, which we are committed to doing.”

Ayala contributed four goals and two assists in 98 appearances across all competitions since joining Portland ahead of the 2022 season.

In Miami, Ayala will join countryman Rodrigo De Paul in helping the Herons to replace retired midfielder Sergio Busquets.

Inter Miami will open the 2026 MLS regular season at Los Angeles FC on Feb. 21.
