FC Dallas tabbed Nico Estevez as their new coach, the organization announced Thursday.

Estevez, 41, spent the past three years as an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s national team. He also was part of the Columbus Crew for five seasons (2014-18), the last two as an assistant coach.

“This is a phenomenal opportunity to lead FC Dallas,” Estevez said in a news release. “The club is globally recognized for developing talent and I’m looking forward to working with these players. I’d like to thank the Hunt family for their trust and commitment. I expect my team to work hard and play an attractive style of soccer that will make FC Dallas fans proud.”

Estevez’s long history of working with young players made him a good fit in the eyes of team president Dan Hunt.

“Nico’s familiarity with our player pool and understanding of our roster are huge assets,” Hunt said. “He understands how to have success across all levels of the game and will do what is necessary to produce winning results.”

FC Dallas (7-15-12, 33 points) struggled throughout the 2021 season and finished 11th in the 13-team Western Conference. The franchise fired third-year coach Luchi Gonzalez on Sept. 19 when the club was saddled with a 6-11-9 record and director of soccer operations Marco Ferruzzi finished out the season on an interim basis.
