CF Montreal acquired forward Kwadwo “Mahala” Opoku from Los Angeles FC in exchange for $1.65 million in 2023 General Allocation Money and $100,000 in 2024 GAM.
In addition, Montreal said in Wednesday’s announcement that it received an additional $100,000 in 2024 GAM for a 2023 international roster spot.
Opoku, 21, has two goals and two assists in 19 matches (13 starts) for LAFC this season. Overall, the Ghana native has nine goals and seven assists in 60 matches (35 starts) in parts of four MLS seasons, all with LAFC.
He also had a goal and an assist in the 2022 postseason en route to LAFC winning the MLS Cup.
“We are very pleased with this acquisition. He is a young player who already possesses good experience in the league, notably having won the MLS Cup last year as a decisive player with LAFC,” CF Montreal vice president Olivier Renard said in a news release. “He will offer us something different from our existing player pool, with his speed and one-on-one ability. It is a profile we’ve been lacking in our squad. I am convinced he will be able to continue his progression with us.”
Opoku has represented Ghana at the U-17 and U-20 levels.
