MLB: Phillies recall LHP Ranger Suarez to make season debut

The Philadelphia Phillies recalled left-hander Ranger Suarez from his rehab assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley to start Saturday’s game against the host Colorado Rockies at Denver.

Suarez had been sidelined with a left elbow strain he sustained since pitching for Venezuela in preparation for the World Baseball Classic. He was placed on the 15-day injured list March 30.

Suarez, 27, posted a 1-0 record with a 1.00 ERA in three rehab starts split between the IronPigs and Double-A Reading.

“It went well,” Suarez, speaking Spanish, told the Philadelphia Inquirer of his rehab starts. “I felt healthy. I threw all of my pitches, my arm felt good. I’m very excited to be here. Excited to help the team.”

He set career highs in wins (10), innings pitched (155 1/3), strikeouts (129) and starts (29) last season.

The Phillies opened a roster spot on Friday when they optioned right-hander Luis Ortiz to Lehigh Valley.

Ortiz, 27, posted a 2.70 ERA without a decision across eight relief appearances this season for the Phillies.
