MLB: Phillies activate RHP Zack Wheeler to start vs. Blue Jays

The Philadelphia Phillies activated right-hander Zack Wheeler from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday’s game against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.

Wheeler had been sidelined due to right forearm tendinitis.

“I think it’s huge,” Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson said of Wheeler’s return. “He’s been one of our top guys ever since he’s got here. It’s such a confidence-builder for the entire club when he’s on this club and when he’s out on the mound, so I think it’s huge.”

Wheeler, 32, is 11-7 with a 3.07 ERA through 23 starts this season. He leads the team in wins and ranks second with 148 strikeouts.

Also on Wednesday, the Phillies optioned right-hander Sam Coonrod to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Coonrod, 29, has a 7.82 ERA without recording a decision in 12 relief appearances this season for the Phillies.
