The Washington Nationals agreed to a four-year contract extension plus a club option for 2031 with right-hander Cade Cavalli on Friday.
Reports pegged the worth as $47 million. The deal would grow to $70 million over five seasons if the Nationals pick up the option.
“We are thrilled that Cade and his family will remain part of the Washington Nationals for years to come,” managing principal owner Mark D. Lerner said in a statement. “Since we drafted Cade in 2020, we’ve been continually impressed with who he is as a baseball player and as a human being. He’s shown that he not only has the talent to excel as a Major Leaguer, but he also possesses the high character and leadership qualities that make him a beloved member of our clubhouse and in the community.”
Cavalli, 28, is enjoying a breakthrough season after dealing with arm injuries over the previous three seasons. He had Tommy John surgery in March 2023 and missed two full campaigns before making 10 starts late in 2025.
This season, Cavalli has made 31 starts and is 12-5 with a 3.12 ERA. He ranks fourth in the National League with 194 strikeouts and has a 1.17 WHIP in 164 2/3 innings.
In 42 career starts for Washington, Cavalli is 15-7 with a 3.60 ERA. He made one start in August 2022 before not taking the mound again for more than 35 months.
Cavalli is slated to start Friday night’s game against the host St. Louis Cardinals.
