Pete Alonso homered and finished with three RBIs for the host New York Mets, who finally earned a series win by beating the San Francisco Giants 8-4 on Sunday night in the finale of a three-game set.

Alonso, a two-time Home Run Derby champion who announced earlier in the evening his plans to participate in this year’s contest, drew a bases-loaded walk to open the Mets’ scoring in the third before hitting a two-run homer in the eighth.

Tommy Pham finished with three hits, two runs and an RBI for the Mets, who hadn’t won a series since sweeping the Philadelphia Phillies from May 30 through June 1. New York went 0-7-1 in its next eight series.

Pham scored the Mets’ third run of the third against Alex Wood (3-3) by racing home when Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford didn’t catch a relay throw from second baseman Thairo Estrada on an RBI infield single by Jeff McNeil.

Mark Canha homered leading off the fourth and Starling Marte laced an RBI single in the seventh for New York. Canha and McNeil joined Alonso by finishing with two hits apiece.

Grant Hartwig (1-1), the first of six Mets relievers, earned his first career win by allowing two hits over two scoreless innings.

Estrada collected an RBI by legging out the back end of a potential double-play ball in the third. The Giants rallied against three Mets relievers in the seventh, when Blake Sabol hit a two-run, pinch-hit homer and J.D. Davis delivered an RBI double before Brooks Raley got Crawford to ground out with two on to end the inning.

Adam Ottavino struck out Davis with the bases loaded in the eighth before David Robertson threw a perfect ninth in a non-save situation.

Luis Matos had two hits for the Giants.

Mets starter David Peterson surrendered one run on three hits and three walks while striking out three over four innings. Ross Stripling, serving as an opener for the Giants, allowed one walk and struck out two over two hitless innings before Wood gave up five runs (four earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out three in 1 2/3 innings.
