New York Mets catcher James McCann fractured his left hand and will require surgery, the club said Friday.

The Mets said McCann will be sidelined approximately six weeks.

McCann broke the hamate bone, located just above the wrist. The Mets said the injury was detected via X-ray on Friday morning.

McCann, 31, was placed on the 10-day injured list and the Mets recalled catcher Patrick Mazeika from Triple-A Syracuse.

McCann is batting .196 with one home run and six RBIs in 21 games this season. He is in the second season of a four-year, $40.6 million deal.

Overall, McCann is a .245 career hitter with 76 homers and 304 RBIs in 743 games over nine seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2014-18), Chicago White Sox (2019-20) and Mets. He was an All-Star with the White Sox in 2019 when he recorded career highs of 18 homers and 60 RBIs.

Mazeika, 28, saw action in 37 games for New York last season. He batted .190 with one homer and six RBIs.

Tomas Nido, who is batting .204 in 18 games, is the Mets’ other catcher.
