Jose Caballero was hit by a pitch with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning, bringing home the go-ahead run as the Seattle Mariners rallied to defeat the visiting Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.
Eugenio Suarez and Tom Murphy homered for Seattle, which trailed 6-1 through 2 1/2 innings. The Mariners took two of three from Tampa Bay after losing their previous three series.
Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes went deep for the Rays.
Mariners reliever Andres Munoz (1-1) got the victory and Paul Sewald earned his 16th save.
Tampa Bay’s Jason Adam (2-2) didn’t allow a hit in the seventh but walked two and hit two to bring home the decisive run.
The Rays scored in each of the first three innings off Mariners All-Star Luis Castillo. Arozarena hit a solo shot down the left-field line with two outs in the first and Paredes did the same with one out in the second.
Suarez went deep to left-center to cut the Rays’ lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the second.
Both teams scored four times in a wild third.
In the top of the inning, Vidal Brujan reached on an error, Josh Lowe singled and Wander Franco hit a sacrifice fly. Arozarena singled and Luke Raley hit a two-run double to right. Singles by Harold Ramirez and Paredes made it 6-1.
With one out in the bottom of the frame, Julio Rodriguez and Ty France hit back-to-back doubles. Teoscar Hernandez hit a slow roller down the third-base line that took Paredes into the baseline. The ball went under Paredes’ glove just before France ran into him, with both players knocked to the infield grass.
Paredes left the game with what the Rays termed left rib discomfort. Jarred Kelenic hit a run-scoring double to left, and with two outs, Mike Ford lined a two-run single up the middle to make it 6-5.
Murphy tied it with a solo shot to left-center with one out in the sixth off Colin Poche.
Rays rookie right-hander Taj Bradley went 3 1/ 3 innings and allowed five runs on nine hits, with one walk and three strikeouts.
Castillo stuck it out for six innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits. The right-hander didn’t walk a batter.
