Luis Severino tossed 6 1/3 solid innings and combined with three relievers on a five-hitter for the host New York Mets, who beat the Washington Nationals 6-2 on Wednesday night.

Jose Iglesias was 3-for-4 with the go-ahead two-RBI single in a four-run sixth inning for the Mets, who have won the first two games of the three-game set to improve to 6-4 this month and move back above .500 at 46-45.

Brandon Nimmo homered in the first and Mark Vientos tied the score with a run-scoring double in the sixth against Patrick Corbin (1-9). Vientos, Pete Alonso and Tyrone Taylor had two hits apiece.

Juan Yepez had a run-scoring single in the fourth inning for the Nationals, who fell to 3-7 in July. Lane Thomas singled, scored a run and stole a base.

Severino (6-3) allowed two runs on four hits — all in the fourth inning — and three walks while striking out four. He has given up two runs or fewer in 10 of his 18 starts this season.

Jake Diekman got the final two outs of the seventh and Danny Young allowed a hit while recording two outs in the eighth. Jose Butto retired all four batters he faced for his first save.

Nimmo’s solo shot with one out in the first extended his home-run streak to three games.

Severino didn’t allow a hit until Keibert Ruiz singled with one out in the fourth. Yepez’s hit tied the game and right fielder Taylor threw wide of home plate as Thomas scored all the way from first.

The Mets were 1-for-5 with a walk with runners on base against Corbin before they rallied in the sixth. J.D Martinez and Alonso opened the inning with singles before Vientos’ double. Derek Law walked Francisco Alvarez before Iglesias’ hit. Iglesias went to third on a single by Taylor and scored when second baseman Luis Garcia Jr. threw the ball away on Harrison Bader’s potential double-play ball.

Taylor’s two-out triple in the eighth scored Iglesias.

Corbin surrendered four runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out five over five innings.
