The Los Angeles Angels placed second baseman Luis Rengifo on the 10-day injured list on Friday because of right wrist inflammation.

In a corresponding move, the Angels selected the contract of infielder Keston Hiura from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Rengifo, 27, was hurt while taking a swing during the game Wednesday at the Oakland Athletics. He fouled a ball off his right arm near the wrist. X-rays did not show any issues of immediate concern, the team said, but an MRI exam on Friday led the Angels to place him on the IL, retroactive to Thursday.

The Venezuela native is batting a career-high .315 with six home runs, 25 RBIs a .442 slugging percentage, .358 on-base percentage and 22 stolen bases in 28 attempts in 69 games. He ranked fifth in the majors in batting average and stolen bases entering Friday’s games.

Rengifo was on the IL earlier this season when a viral illness resulted in painful blisters on his feet.

In six seasons with Los Angeles starting in 2019, Rengifo is batting .254 with 53 homers, 182 RBIs and 40 stolen bases in 517 games.

Hiura, 27, who signed with the Angels on June 11 after the Tigers released him, had hit 12 home runs in 19 games with Triple-A Salt Lake. He’s expected to serve as designated hitter and substitute for Nolan Schanuel at first base.

The Angels also transferred right-hander Andrew Wantz, 28, from the 15- to the 60-day IL because of right elbow inflammation. The move opens up a 40-man roster spot for Hiura.
