CALLOFDUTY: OpTic, FaZe rally for opening wins in CDL Major II

OpTic Texas and the Atlanta FaZe each captured the last two maps to rally for 3-2 wins on Thursday as the Call of Duty League’s Major II got underway in Boston.

Also prevailing on the first day of the in-person event were the Minnesota Rokkr and the Toronto Ultra. In the second round of the winners bracket on Saturday, the FaZe will oppose the Ultra while the Rokkr will face OpTic.

Atlanta beat host Boston Breach 3-2, and Minnesota downed the New York Subliners 3-2. Toronto topped the Los Angeles Guerrillas 3-1, and Texas defeated the Los Angeles Thieves 3-2.

The Thursday losers drop into the elimination bracket in the double-elimination event, which already was populated in the last four Call of Duty League teams from qualifying for Major II.

In knockout matches on Friday, the Thieves will oppose the Florida Mutineers, the Subliners will meet the London Royal Ravens, the Guerrillas will face the Vegas Legion and the Breach will clash with the Seattle Surge.

On Thursday, the Thieves started with a 250-179 win on Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint, and OpTic responded with a 6-1 victory on Mercado Las Almas Search and Destroy. Los Angeles jumped on top again by taking Breenbergh Hotel Search and Destroy 3-2, but OpTic replied by winning Zarqwa Hydroelectric 250-233 and El Asilo Search and Destroy 6-4.

Canada’s Brandon “Dashy” Otell produced 102 kills and a 1.36 kill-death ratio for OpTic. Sam “Octane” Larew registed 92 kills and a 1.28 K-D ratio for the Thieves.

Boston won Al Bagra Fortress Hardpoint 250-199 and El Asilo Control 3-2 sandwiching Atlanta’s 6-2 victory on Embassy Search and Destroy. The FaZe closed out the match by taking Mercado Las Almas Hardpoint 250-105 and El Asilo Search and Destroy 6-0.

The United States’ Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris logged 95 kills and a 1.10 K-D ratio for the FaZe. Another U.S. player, Joseph “Owakening” Conley, finished with 87 kills and a 1.16 K-D ratio for the Breach.

The Subliners opened with a 250-153 win on Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint before the Rokkr took Breenbergh Hotel Search and Destroy 6-4 and El Asilo Control 3-2. New York extended the match with a 234-184 victory on Embassy Hardpoint, but Minnesota sealed the series by claiming Embassy Search and Destroy 6-5.

England’s Ben “Bance” Bance paced the Rokkr with 102 kills and a 1.27 K-D ratio. France’s Paco “HyDra” Rusiewiez topped the Subliners with 102 kills and a 1.26 K-D ratio.

Toronto began by claiming Breenbergh Hotel Hardpoint 250-160 and Mercado Las Almas Search and Destroy 6-4. The Guerrillas posted a 3-2 victory on Al Bagra Fortress Control, but the Ultra wrapped up the set with a 250-128 triumph on Al Bagra Fortress Hardpoint.

The United States’ Thomas “Scrap” Ernst and Denmark’s Tobias “CleanX” Juul Jonsson each had 91 kills for the Ultra. Kaden “Exceed” Stockdale of the United States led the Guerrillas with 69 kills.
