Boxer Paul Bamba, who won the WBA Gold Cruiserweight title a week ago, has died at 35.

His death was announced by his family and his manager, singer/songwriter Ne-Yo, in a joint statement issued Friday. No cause of death was released, nor was the date of his passing.

The Puerto Rican fighter won the world championship by defeating Rogelio Medina Luna in New Jersey on Dec. 21. The knockout victory was the 14th in as many bouts over a 12-month span, breaking Mike Tyson’s record for most professional fights in one year.

Last month, Bamba became the first boxer to sign with Ne-Yo’s new management company.

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of beloved son, brother, friend and boxing champion Paul Bamba, whose light and love touched countless lives,” the statement read.

“He was a fierce yet confident competitor with an unrelenting ambition to achieve greatness. But more than anything, he was a tremendous individual that inspired many with his exceptional drive and determination. We are heartbroken by his passing and kindly ask for privacy and understanding during this difficult time as we collectively navigate our grief.”

Bamba improved to 19-3 after recording his win last week.

‘Wasn’t easy there were many obstacles that I adapted to overcame and kept on the path we set regardless of extenuating circumstances,” Bamba wrote on Instagram this week. “14 fights 14 knockouts ending with the WBA GOLD cruiserweight world title.

‘Blessed to have my family my team and all my supporters along the way. That being said if you got what some might call an ‘outlandish goal’ GO chase it. Anyone who thinks that isn’t as brave as you, prove people wrong!’
