ATP: ATP roundup: Diego Schwartzman swiftly advances at Cordoba

Top-seeded Diego Schwartzman of Argentina needed just 71 minutes on Wednesday to defeat countrymate Juan Pablo Ficovich 6-3, 6-2 in the second round of the Corboda Open in Argentina.

Schwartzman, ranked 14th in the world, beat the qualifier while playing for the first time since losing in the second round of the Australian Open. He’ll next play in the quarterfinals on Friday against Colombian lucky loser Daniel Elahi Galan, who notched a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 triumph over Spain’s Jaume Munar.

Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Londero advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory over Spain’s Pedro Martinez. Londero will face fourth-seeded Serbian Nikola Milojevic, who defeated Argentina wild card Tomas Martin Etcheverry 6-3, 7-6 (4).

Richard Gasquet had nine aces en route to a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-3 victory over No. 7 seed Umo Humbert in a battle of Frenchmen during the first round at Montpellier, France.

Gasquet served five of his aces in the final set while knocking off Humbert, who had 13 aces. Gasquet also saved 10 of 11 break-point chances, and Humbert saved 7 of 10.

Second-seeded Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut moved on 6-4, 3-2 when French qualifier Gilles Simon retired with thigh and back ailments from the second-round match. Among other second-round matches, fifth-seeded Serbian Filip Krajinovic defeated France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 7-6 (2) and sixth-seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan was a 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2 winner over France qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Second-seeded Lorenzo Musetti delivered nine aces while knocking off Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3 in second-round play at Pune, India.

The Italian will next face Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak, who notched a 6-3, 7-6 (7) victory over Quentin Hayes of France.

In other matches, Portugal’s Joao Sousa defeated third-seeded Italian Gianluca Mager 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4), and fifth-seeded German Daniel Altmaier knocked off Moldova’s Radu Albot 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
