The Cleveland Cavaliers promoted Brandon Weems to general manager in a series of front-office moves on Friday.
Weems, 40, has been an assistant GM with the club since 2022. He replaces Mike Gansey, who was hired as the Philadelphia 76ers’ president of basketball operations in May.
“Brandon has earned this opportunity through more than a decade of exceptional work with the Cavaliers and by consistently demonstrating elite judgment and the expertise required to help lead our basketball operations,” said team president of basketball operations Koby Altman. “He has been instrumental in our player evaluation and roster-building processes, has a deep understanding of our culture, and has grown into a tremendous leader.”
Weems will take on increased responsibility, including responsibility for roster management and contract negotiations, oversight of global scouting and day-to-day operations of the team. He will continue to work closely with Altman on the draft process, including player evaluations and rankings, background research and statistical analysis of draft-eligible prospects.
Weems played high school basketball with NBA superstar LeBron James at St. Vincent-St. Mary in Akron, Ohio.

Weems has been in the Cleveland organization since being hired as a scout in 2015. He was the director of scouting from 2017-21 and the senior director of player personnel from 2021-22.
Weems previously worked on the collegiate coaching staffs at Kentucky (2009-12), Drexel (2012-13) and Oakland (2013-15).
The Cavaliers also elevated Jon Nichols to associate general manager and Brendon Yu and Jose Calderon to assistant general managers. Cleveland hired Dashiell Flynn as chief technology officer of basketball operations.
