Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was suspended for one game for roughing Tampa Bay Lightning forward Mathieu Joseph during Thursday night’s game.

Larkin, a forward, received a match penalty for the incident, which occurred with 8:20 left in the second period of the Lightning’s 7-6 win in Detroit. Joseph was hit with a minor penalty.

Larkin had a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday.

“What causes this play to rise to the level of supplemental discipline is the retaliatory nature of the punch and the force with which it is delivered to an unsuspecting opponent,” a Department of Player Safety official said via video.

Larkin had not received a fine or suspension before during his seven-year NHL career, spent entirely with Detroit.

The Red Wings are scheduled to host the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday night.
