WTA: WTA roundup: Qualifier upsets Jil Teichmann in Transylvania

Qualifier Anastasia Gasanova upset fourth-seeded Jil Teichmann of Switzerland 4-6, 6-0, 7-5 on Monday in the first round of the Transylvania Open in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

Gasanova, a 22-year-old Russian who is ranked 146th in the world, managed to overcome hitting 12 double faults without serving an ace. She lost her serve five times but took advantage of half of her 16 break-point opportunities.

Fifth-seeded Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia edged Russia’s Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 5-7, 7-5, and eighth-seeded Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine routed the Netherlands’ Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove 6-1, 6-1.

Also earning first-round wins were Germany’s Mona Barthel and Anna-Lena Friedsam, Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko and Romania’s Ana Bogdan.

Courmayeur Ladies Open

The three seeded players who competed Monday at Courmayeur, Italy, combined to lose just 10 games in easy first-round victories.

No. 5 Clara Tauson of Denmark topped Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele 6-2, 6-2. No. 6 Alison Riske of the United States ousted India’s Ankita Raina 6-1, 6-1, and No. 10 Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine dumped Russia’s Vitalia Diatchenko 6-3, 6-1.

Italy’s Lucrezia Stefanini and Giulia Gatto-Monticone, Spain’s Aliona Bolsova, Poland’s Magdalena Frech and Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova also posted first-round wins.
