WNCAAB: Former LSU player Danielle Ballard killed when hit by car

Former LSU standout Danielle Ballard died early Thursday morning after being struck by a car in Memphis. She was 29.

Ballard, a Memphis native, was hit around 1:30 a.m. She was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene. Police said an investigation is ongoing.

The 5-foot-9 Ballard was a star player at Central High in Memphis before playing three seasons at LSU from 2012-15. She was a first-team All-SEC selection in the 2014-15 season.

One season earlier, she averaged 23.3 points and 14.0 rebounds in three NCAA Tournament games as LSU reached the Sweet 16. Ballard had 24 points and 17 rebounds against Georgia Tech, 22 points and 15 boards against West Virginia, and 24 points and 10 rebounds in the season-ending loss to Louisville.

Ballard averaged 12.1 points and 6.8 rebounds in 81 games (67 starts) for the Tigers.
