NHL: Sabres F Zemgus Girgensons signs 1-year contract

Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons signed a one-year contract worth $2.5 million on Tuesday.

Girgensons, 29, would have been eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1.

The Latvian is the team’s longest-tenured player, with 625 games played since being selected by the Sabres with the 14th overall pick of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Girgensons recorded 18 points (10 goals, eight assists) in each of the last two seasons while serving as the team’s alternate captain. He has totaled 174 points (81 goals, 93 assists) and 171 penalty minutes in his career.
