Pittsburgh Penguins superstar captain Sidney Crosby and defenseman Brian Dumoulin sat out Wednesday’s practice after testing positive for COVID-19, head coach Mike Sullivan announced.
The Penguins said Crosby has mild symptoms and Dumoulin is asymptomatic. Both players were placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol.
Crosby, who underwent wrist surgery on Sept. 8, made his season debut on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils. He was held off the scoresheet and registered a minus-3 rating in a 4-2 loss to the Devils.
“I’m sure he’s discouraged,” Sullivan said of Crosby. “He worked extremely hard to get to this point, and we were all so excited about getting him back in the fold. This puts another road block in front of it. But we’ll control what we can, and we’re hopeful that Sid will return soon.”
Crosby, 34, has recorded 1,325 points (486 goals, 839 assists) in 1,040 games since being selected by the Penguins with the top overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft. He is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Hart Trophy recipient.
Dumoulin, 30, has one assist in eight games this season. He has 97 points (15 goals, 82 assists) in 396 career games with the Penguins since being selected by the Carolina Hurricanes in the second round of the 2009 NHL Draft.
