NHL: Hurricanes G Frederik Andersen injured in Game 4 vs. Devils

Carolina Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen exited Game 4 of an Eastern Conference first-round series following a second-period collision in the crease with New Jersey Devils right winger Timo Meier on Sunday in Newark, N.J.

With the Hurricanes leading 3-1, Meier moved into the crease and extended his stick a split second after a shot by teammate Ondrej Palat sailed wide of the net. Andersen’s momentum was carrying him to the right as Meier, who appeared to be trying to screech to a halt, hit Andersen in the upper body.

Andersen fell into the net and Meier was initially whistled for a five-minute major, though it was overturned upon review.

Andersen, who stopped six of seven shots, was replaced by Pyotr Kochetkov with 15:41 left.

Fewer than three minutes after Andersen’s departure, Meier scored against Kochetkov to pull the hosts within 3-2.
