The Carolina Hurricanes added goaltender Frederik Andersen to their list of players in the COVID-19 protocol on Wednesday.

The NHL is on an early holiday break, effective now, to give teams a chance for their players to get healthy. Team facilities will reopen on Sunday.

In 21 games on the season, Andersen, 32, has a 16-5-0 record — the second-highest win total in the NHL behind Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning. He is tied with Tristan Jarry of the Pittsburgh Penguins for the league lead in goals-against average with 1.93. His save percentage is .930.

Other Hurricanes currently in the COVID-19 protocol are forwards Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis, Jordan Staal, Andrei Svechnikov and Steven Lorentz, along with defensemen Ian Cole and Brendan Smith.

Goaltender coach Paul Schonfelder also tested positive for the virus.

The Hurricanes added Smith to the list on Monday, but hopes are the remaining players will be out of the protocol when Carolina is scheduled to host the Florida Panthers on Monday.

Andersen is in his first season with the Hurricanes, following time with the Anaheim Ducks (2013-16) and Toronto Maple Leafs (2016-21). In 414 career games (402 starts), Andersen has a 242-105-48 record with a 2.61 GAA and .916 save percentage.
