New Jersey Devils star forward Jack Hughes is scheduled for shoulder surgery on Wednesday and will miss the rest of the season, the team announced Tuesday.

Hughes, his family and representatives and the Devils’ medical staff determined that he should be sidelined for the rest of the season and proceed with the surgery, to be performed April 10 by Dr. Peter Millett in Vail, Colo., the team said in a statement.

Hughes, 22, is expected to be ready for the start of training camp next season.

Already scratched from Tuesday’s home game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Hughes missed five games from Nov. 5-16 and 11 games from Jan. 6-Feb. 6 because of an upper-body injury.

Hughes recorded 74 points (team-leading 27 goals, 47 assists) in 62 games this season for the Devils (37-36-5, 79 points), who are five points behind the Detroit Red Wings for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey has four games remaining on its schedule.

Hughes has totaled 281 points (114 goals, 167 assists) in 306 career games since he was selected by the Devils with the top overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.
