Montreal Canadiens forward Alex Newhook will be sidelined for approximately 10 to 12 weeks due to a high ankle sprain, the team announced Saturday.

Newhook sustained the injury when he crashed into the side of the net early in the third period of Montreal’s 5-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday.

Newhook, 22, recorded 13 points (seven goals, six assists) in 23 games this season.

A Stanley Cup champion with the Avalanche in 2022, Newhook has 79 points (34 goals, 45 assists) in 182 career games since being selected by Colorado with the 16th overall pick of the 2019 NHL Draft.

Newhook was traded to the Canadiens on June 27 for a first- and second-round pick in the 2023 NHL Draft and minor-league defenseman Gianni Fairbrother. Newhook signed a four-year, $11.6 million contract with Montreal on July 11.
