Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy exited with a concussion in the third quarter of Sunday’s 24-15 road loss against the Denver Broncos.
McCoy started because Kyler Murray sustained a season-ending ACL injury in Monday’s loss to the New England Patriots.
Arizona coach Kliff Kingsbury said McCoy is entering the NFL concussion protocol. That means he must be cleared by an independent neurologist before being able to return to the field.
“I think he’s doing OK,” Kingsbury said afterward. “You never like to see that happen. It’s a tough impact, going out there seeing him like that but, talking to our trainers, I think he’s doing better, so that’s good.”
McCoy, 36, was injured on the third offensive play of the second half with the Cardinals leading 6-3 when he was stopped after a 1-yard run. He attempted to get up before falling back to the ground and was evaluated by team trainers.
A cart was summoned to bring McCoy off the field but he declined, walked off the field on his power and went to the locker room.
McCoy was 13-of-21 passing for 78 yards and one interception before exiting.
Trace McSorley replaced McCoy. The 27-year-old was making his fourth appearance of the season and seventh of his career. He completed 7 of 15 passes for 95 yards and two interceptions.
Entering the day, McSorley was 11 of 24 for 161 yards, one touchdown and one interception with the Baltimore Ravens (2019-21) and Cardinals (2021-22).
McSorley is the probable starter when the Cardinals host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers next Sunday night. David Blough, who was inactive against Denver, would be the backup.
Arizona (4-10) was eliminated from playoff consideration with the loss to Denver.
