San Francisco 49ers star left tackle Trent Williams was diagnosed with a right ankle sprain, which he suffered in Saturday’s playoff win over the Green Bay Packers.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Williams’ X-rays were negative and left open the possibility that he’ll be able to play in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams.

“You’ve got to see how the week goes, whether it heals,” Shanahan said. “If it was a high, then I’d rule him out.”

The coach added that there was “some old stuff in there too” regarding Williams’ injury. Williams played 15 games in the regular season and was named a first-team All-Pro for the first time, in addition to his ninth Pro Bowl selection.

Running back Jeff Wilson Jr. also suffered an ankle sprain against Green Bay. He was carted to the locker room early on, but Shanahan said his ended up not being a high-ankle sprain, either, and he also has a chance to play Sunday.

Wilson appeared in nine games (four starts) in 2021 and rushed for 294 yards and two touchdowns.

Shanahan also said that wide receiver Deebo Samuel was “sore” after taking a helmet to the side of his leg at the end of the Packers game. Samuel was San Francisco’s most dangerous weapon on offense in 2021, leading the team in receiving with 1,405 yards on 77 catches with six touchdowns and adding 365 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

“We expect to see him on the practice field this week,” Shanahan said.
