St. Bonaventure is finalizing a deal to make Division II standout Mike MacDonald the Bonnies’ new men’s basketball coach, ESPN reported Monday.

MacDonald has guided Daemen University of Amherst, N.Y., to a combined 61-3 record over the past two seasons.

Longtime St. Bonaventure coach Mark Schmidt announced his retirement on March 7 after 19 seasons, including a 17-17 finish (4-14 Atlantic 10) in 2025-26.

MacDonald owns a career record of 522-312. He is 265-86 since taking over at Daemen in 2014. He previously was the head coach at Division I Canisius (1997-2006) and Division III Medaille University (2006-14).

MacDonald graduated from St. Bonaventure in 1988.

He received the Clarence Gaines Award in 2025 as the most outstanding men’s coach in Division II and is a six-time conference Coach of the Year.
