Timmy Allen and Andrew Jones scored 15 points apiece and the Texas defense all but eliminated scoring from beyond the arc for the second straight game as No. 8 Texas defeated visiting California Baptist 68-44 on Wednesday in the finale of the Abe Lemons Classic in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns’ defense carried the day again, limiting California Baptist to just 16 points in the first half and 40.5 percent shooting overall. Texas (4-1) broke open the game with a late-first half run and continued to stymie the Lancers with its depth, tenacity and balanced scoring. Texas has held four of its first five opponents this season to under 50 points.

Courtney Ramey and Christian Bishop added 12 points each for the Longhorns, who forced 23 turnovers and had 33 points from its bench players.

Daniel Akin led California Baptist with just nine points while Chance Hunter had eight points. The Lancers (5-1) shot just 12.5 percent (2 of 16) on their 3-point shots.

The Longhorns led from the start but took a while to get really on track offensively, leading 23-14 with 5:35 to play in the half. Texas then ran off a 12-0 spurt and earned a 35-16 advantage at the half.

Allen paced all scorers with nine points, as Ramey had eight and Jones added seven for the Longhorns. Texas outshot the Lancers 40.7 percent to 30.4 percent and forced California Baptist into 12 turnovers that led to 13 Longhorns’ points.

Ty Rowell had five points to lead the Lancers’ attack, which was limited by 1 of 9 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. California Baptist’s 16 points at the half was its lowest-scoring output in any half this season.

Texas hosts Sam Houston on Monday. Cal Baptist hosts San Diego Christian on Saturday.
